South Florida's oldest high school, a landmark known for its 1920s-era architecture, is being restored to its Mediterranean-style splendor. Alumni members and school board officials were at hand on Monday for a groundbreaking ceremony. Construction of the school is expected to cost at least $50 million. Miami Senior High School, whose student body over the years has included former Sen. Bob Graham, actor Desi Arnaz, Miami Heat player Udonis Haslem and other prominent South Floridians, will soon undergo the much needed renovations. The project, expected to be completed in 2013, will undo some renovations made to the school over the years that stressed function over style and attempt to make the Little Havana school new again. New construction includes a pair of two story buildings and a new 3-level parking garage. Miami High School was formally established in 1903, making it South Florida's oldest high school, said Howard Kleinberg, author of The Stingaree Century: A 100-Year History of Miami High School. The school has been at its current building, constructed in the Mediterranean Revival style, since 1928.
