Existing Technology to Be Used for Project M

While the project is not fully funded nor vetted at the agency level, much progress has already been made by leveraging and coalescing existing, funded technology work; by forming innovative partnerships; and by a small project team focusing on fast iterative design, test, and execution. Project M is a proposed project to land an operational humanoid robot on the moon in 1000 days (M is the Roman numeral for 1000). The humanoid will travel to the moon on a small lander fueled by green propellants, liquid methane and liquid oxygen. It will perform a precision, autonomous landing, avoiding any hazards or obstacles on the surface. Upon landing the robot will deploy and walk on the surface performing a multitude of tasks focused on demonstrating engineering tasks such as maintenance and construction; performing science of opportunity (ie using existing sensors on the robot or small science instruments); and simple student experiments.

How to Design a Retaining Wall Project

Design your retaining wall project. This video takes you step-by-step through Allan Block retaining wall design considerations. This mortarless system requires no concrete, grout, or pins to hold it together. Some of the topics include: wall height, slopes above and below the wall, surcharges, setback or batter of the wall, gravity walls vs geogrid reinforced walls, patterned walls, and terraced walls. You can find many more videos, photos, literature, estimating tools and more regarding retaining walls, AB Courtyard Collection seating walls and the AB Fence product at www.allanblock.com.

Cabinet Project - Building a wall unit/dresser cabinet

The planning and construction of a 26-drawer combination dresser/wall unit from plywood and lumber purchased from Home Depot and Lowes Hardware. The unit is comprised of 8 separate cabinet units that all stack up to form what appears to be a single large wall unit. Although the overall unit seems formidable, by breaking this down into individual cabinets it became much simpler. Each cabinet was constructed separately. A good bit of time was spent in planning and checking (and rechecking) dimensions before I began cutting lumber. I went to work cutting the dozens of parts and set them aside as I finished each. When done with the parts, I began assembling the parts into the cabinets. Finishing was also time-consuming. There were two coats of primer, three coats of gloss white finish paint, and two coats of clear gloss acrylic.

Put Your Remote Control Construction Equipment to Work on This Fun Winter Project

Parts of the country got buried in snow over the past few days. Here in Indianapolis Mother Nature was nice to us. We only got a couple of inches. Still, that's enough snow to tickle my gray matter into creating a project you can use for playing with your remote control construction equipment.

RC construction toys aren't just for building things you know, and this plan promises hours of fun for radio control construction hobbyists. It's a snow removal activity that makes you laugh with pleasure, rather than sweat from bending over a shovel.

You don't need much snow to perform this project because even as little as an inch of snow is enough to put your different construction toys to work.

You'll want to include a walking path from your door to the mailbox and driveway, the driveway itself, the sidewalk, and any other paths you normally travel along at your home.

First you'll need to clear an area for depositing all the snow you move out of your way. You'll want a space large enough to maneuver your dump trucks, and big enough for dumping all the snow those trucks haul for you.

Start removing the deeper snow with your RC excavators. Just like digging to prepare an area for the foundation of a building, dig the deep snow a bucket at a time. Continue this effort until the snow is shallow enough that the excavators can no longer fill their buckets without digging into the ground beneath.

As you grab each excavator bucket with snow place it into the dump trucks so they can haul it to your deposit area. When each truck bed is full of snow drive the truck to your dumpsite, and drop the snow off out of your way. Another excavator working at the deposit site can pile the snow to provide more room for the dump trucks to do their job.

While those trucks are off dumping their loads keep on working with the excavators at the work site, piling snow off to the side, and progressing towards your snow removal destination. Later you can return to these piles, and remove them too.

Once you have the snow cleared as far as the excavators can dig bring in the loaders and continue your removal project. Pick up the rest of the snow along your path into the buckets, and deposit each full bucket into the dump trucks for hauling to the dumpsite. Continue this remote control construction operation until your path is clear of snow, and you have access to every spot you want to reach.

Next fill the dump trucks with ice-melting chemicals to distribute along the paths you just cleared. Use the front loaders to scoop the chemicals from the trucks, and spread them along the path so no ice forms, and nobody slips and falls, injuring him or herself. Use the excavators for scooping the chemical from the truck to the loader to give yourself more RC playtime if you like.

Give yourself a break. Don't sweat over a shovel, grunting and heaving that snow out of your way.

Use this remote control construction project, and turn that snow removal job into a game.
