Three Construction Estimates Can Create Problems For Unsuspecting Homeowners

Everyone tells you that you should have a least three construction estimates before choosing which contractor you plan on using for your project. I agree with that even though, all you need sometimes is one. I'm going to share a story with you about three construction estimates, from three different contractors that created problems for unsuspecting homeowners.

An unsuspecting homeowner is someone who believes almost everything that another person tells them. A few years ago three contractors got together with a few other professionals who would recommend them to homeowners, looking for some good contractors. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could get three recommendations and get three estimates with out a lot a hassle?

Well here's what happened, someone would all three of these contractors to a homeowner and each one of the contractors would provide a homeowner with three estimates. All of the estimates were similar and provided the homeowners with a good format and description of the project.

One of the contractors would create all three of the estimates and then meet with the other contractors. There weren't any phone conversations or e-mails ever sent, the contractors would meet for breakfast every Thursday and go over the estimates and decide who was going to get the next job.

Here's an example of what they were doing. If they were providing estimates for a bathroom remodeling project that would have normally cost $12,000, the lowest estimates from contractor number one would have been around $14,000, contractor number two $15,000 in contractor number three would have been around $16,000.

It's hard to imagine how creative some people can be, but be careful when receiving referrals from other contractors, construction professionals and others, who might not have your best interest in mind. If you want avoid nightmare like the one above, don't accept more than one referral from one person ever.
